All – Every – Each – The whole

all و every مي توانند در يك معني (همه) بكار روند با اين تقاوت كه all با يك اسم جمع بكار مي رود در حاليكه every با يك اسم مفرد بكار مي رود.

- All towns have a post office.

- Every town has a post office.

در جملا منفي از not all و not every با همان مشخصات استفاده مي شود.

- Not all towns have a hospital.

- Not every town has a hospital.

each (هر، همه) نيز مانند every با يك اسم و فعل مفرد بكار مي رود.

- Each idea is good one.

the whole نيز مي تواند معني يكساني با all داشته باشد.

- She spent all her life alone.

- She spent the whole of her life alone.

ولي معمولاً all با يك اسم غير قابل شمارش بكار مي رود در حاليكه the whole با يك اسم مفرد قابل شمارش بكار مي رود.

- He ate all the food.

- He ate the whole meal.
